MONYASH – DALEHOUSE FARM –
BLACKWELL LANE
CROSS LANE
- MONYASH

Distance: Approximately 1 ½ miles

Walk up
Chapel Street
and head out of Monyash on the road to Flagg. As you pass the bottom of
Horse Lane
which goes off to your right notice the tiny little cottage which was at one time a tollhouse, collecting fees from anyone following this road. Shortly afterwards on the left is the old pinfold – a small shelter where stray animals would have been kept whilst their owners were established.

On reaching Dalehouse Farm turn left up the old track beside the cottages which is known as
Blackwell Lane
. This was at one time the route of the Derby-Manchester road. In 1820 it was referred to as a pack-and-prime way. The green prime way being for splay-footed oxen drawing carts, as opposed to packhorse routes that often passed along stone flagged paths. This lovely old lane now forms part of the
Limestone Way
long distance walk..

As you head towards the area known as Knotlow notice on the left there is a stile into a very small field with the entrance to a cave, whilst a little further on in a copse of trees there is a path leading to the gated shaft of Wharf Mine.

When you come to a junction of paths and a derelict farm building, turn left and head back towards the village along
Cross Lane
.

On a slight bend between the new farmhouse and Cross Lane Farm you should find a stile on your left. Go over the stile and head diagonally across fields, following a series of stiles which bring you back into Monyash with the final stile being beside a cottage at the far end of Chapel Row.
