The Peak District has had a starring part in the latest Hollywood blockbuster version of Robin Hood – starring Russell Crowe and directed by Sir Ridley Scott – in movie theatres from Friday 14 May 2010.
Beautiful Dovedale features prominently as the film crew used the stunning landscape at Thorpe Pastures and Lindale, which stretches down to the famous Stepping Stones across the River Dove.
Closing scenes for the film were shot here over 2 days, although crew were on site for about 4 week altogether, setting up and creating stabling for the horses. The sheer scale of the production was awe-inspiring, involving over 700 people and 140 horses.
Russell Ashfield, Property Manager of the National Trust’s South Peak Estate, said:
‘Being involved in the making of the film was really exciting. And I shall never forget the looks on the faces of a family who were simply out for a walk – they were somewhat surprised to see horses with riders in full chain mail charging towards them! Russell Crowe later kindly went over to them to say hello and sign autographs.’
The income generated from the filming will be used directly in the management and upkeep of Dovedale. The local economy also benefited as the film cast and crew stayed in local hotels and guest houses
